1992 World War II(For other WWII 50th Anniversary sheets, see pages 73, 78, 80 & 84.)
Stamp collectors like sets to be sets, so artist
William H. Bond and art director Howard Paine
teamed up to oversee the five-year World War II
project. The project involved the Postal Service,
Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps historians,
and the State Department. Everything had to be
“just right” – the timing of events, the accuracy of
detail, the mood and feel of subjects depicted.
1942 was America’s first full year of participation

in the war. It was a year of coming from behind
for the Allies as the 1992 sheetlet “Into the Battle”
shows. The map and stamps focus on bombing
Tokyo, Coral Sea, Midway, and the deciphering of
enemy codes, as well as Corregidor, Guadalcanal,
and other crucial topics.

The 1993 Chinese New Year stamp calls
attention to the Chinese lunar calendar.
According to the lunar calendar, on January 23,
1993, the year 4691 began. This ancient calendar
follows a twelve-year cycle, with each year
symbolized by a different animal. As featured on
the stamp, issued in December 1992, the Rooster
was the animal for 1993. Two ideograms are
also featured, written in Kanji, a written language
developed from Chinese by the Japanese.
