According to the lunar calendar, on January 23, 1993, the year 4691 began. This ancient calendar follows a twelve-year cycle, with each year symbolized by a different animal. As featured on the stamp, issued in December 1992, the Rooster was the animal for 1993. Two ideograms are also featured, written in Kanji, a written language developed from Chinese by the Japanese. 76
