The U.S. Postal Service began planning for the war’s 50th anniversary in 1985. It wanted to honor the key events of the war effort as well as various aspects of national endeavor that contributed to victory for the Allies. But how to do that without producing a thousand stamps? The solution was a series of sheetlets, one for each year of the war, that consisted of a large center map framed by five stamps on the top and five on the bottom. Five years of commemorating World War II would yield five sheets, for a total of 50 stamps – enough for an honorable tribute and enough to accomplish postal service goals. The world maps are masterpieces of thumbnail summaries. They call attention to the major military and political developments of the year and include events not 2562-66 Scott Number Mint Used 2562-66 29¢ Comedians 5 Stamps..................... $8.95 $1.50 2562 29¢ Laurel & Hardy...... 1.85 .40 2563 29¢ Bergen & McCarthy 1.85 .40 2564 29¢ Jack Benny ........... 1.85 .40 2565 29¢ Fanny Brice........... 1.85 .40 2566 29¢ Abbott & Costello.. 1.85 .40 2567 Jan E. Laurel’s character, a thin, dimwitted simpleton, interacted with Hardy’s overweight, bully character with hilarious results! Edgar Bergen was an expert ventriloquist, so good that his dummy partner, Charlie McCarthy, often made him look like a dummy. Jack Benny, the violin-playing comedian, was a star on radio, television, and in 18 motion pictures. Comedienne Fanny Brice became famous singing in the Ziegfeld Follies. Her Baby Snooks radio series was her most popular work. Abbott and Costello became partners when Costello’s original partner fell ill before a show, and Abbott, who was working in the box office, stood in. 2571 29¢ Moon..................... 2.00 .30 2572 29¢ Mars...................... 2.00 .30 2573 29¢ Jupiter................... 2.00 .30 2574 29¢ Saturn ................... 2.00 .30 2575 29¢ Uranus .................. 2.00 .30 2576 29¢ Neptune ................ 2.00 .30 2577 29¢ Pluto...................... 2.00 .30 SM968 Scott Mounts, Set of 5, 229x131mm ..9.25 2553-57 Summer Olympics 2568-77 Space Exploration
