On his safe return, February 20, 1962, at 3:30 p.m., Postal Headquarters ordered the pouches be opened. Within 11/2 hours, many offices sold out their entire stock! Postal Service Renders Rare Stamp “Worthless” After the discovery of the Hammarskjöld invert error, the Postal Service intentionally printed and issued an identical version of the stamp. This reprint, Scott #1204, was created to devalue the original error stamp and prevent individuals from profiting from the Postal Service’s mistake. Later, a court decision ruled this act was illegal. Inverted stamps on cover that are dated before the reissued stamps were available are quite valuable. 1209 A. Jackson 1208 50-Star Flag 1204 U.N.
